The Girl With the Biggest Hair

January 2, 2008 7:36 PM

A song of love, desire, and big hair.

My highschool band, Bovine Ignition Systems, modeled itself after They Might Be Giants - two of us, recording everything and rarely performing, but we spent a lot of time on our weird little songs. The Girl With the Biggest Hair came out of that, and is, improbably, a waltz. This song is, officially, 20 years old; I'm the vocalist and was 16 when it was recorded.

That's awesome and I have tapes of shit like this. I mean shit in a good way. And you had way better fake drums than I did. But I think I'm 3 years older than you. Is that a Casio?

Well, your influences are certainly on your sleeve! (Especially that fake-baritone-sax! And those "sproing"s, too.)

This is actually a much more complex song, structurally, than I was expecting from high school TMBG fans.

Have you got anything more current?

(Like chococat, I've got stuff like this kicking around, too. Early TMBG is still a big influence on the way I think about songmaking.)

Man, where did you get such a sweet setup in 1988? Stereo! (Also, this is neat. Charming, even.)

The rest of our music, by the way:

Bovine Ignition Systems

The setup was a Korg M1 doing a lot of the music (loved that thing) and a Tascam 4-Track Portastudio.

More recent music is here but even that's 10 years old. I haven't written much recently.
