Marcia Pontifica (Pontifical Anthem - Vatican City)

December 11, 2011 4:45 PM

Why? Because we haven't made enough fun of the Papacy this year. This is Anthemic.

ABOUT THE ANTHEM:

National Anthem for Vatican City (they don't like to call themselves a nation, but whatever). It's uncertain how long it's been since this was first adopted by the church, or who wrote it, but it's very very old. Some...small liberties have been taken with the text.

...I'm not sure how we found that cathedral on such short notice...

LYRICS:

[English Translation]

Hail, O Rome, Eternal adobe of memories;
A thousand palms and a thousand altars sing your praises.

O city of the Apostles, Mother and guide of the elect,
Light of the nations, and hope of the world!

Hail, O Rome! Your light will never fade;
The splendour of your beauty disperses hatred and shame.

O city of the Apostles, Mother and guide of the elect,
Light of the nations, and hope of the world!
