Almost Over (sore throat mix)

Holy crap, this is rough. On the knife edge between soul and reggae, neither of which I'm qualified to sing, but part of my ongoing project to write songs people actually want to listen to.

Basically, the drummer took me to one side and told me to write songs that people liked on the first or second listen rather than the seventh. So that's where I've been coming from recently. Just to fuck him up, I put a funk loop on this. We've been knocking this back and forth in the rehearsal room and it really wants to live on the cusp between soul and reggae. When it gets too ska it's no good, and when it loses the big offbeat emphasis it's no good. So the drums are funk, the bass is playing mostly reggae 1-drop, the organ is playing Wailers-style on the 3, the chord guitar is playing kinda new wave chops... I don't know what the hell is going on really.

Recorded with a sore throat so vocals are NG but I welcome your thoughts.

Really digging this ... although I want some big horn stabs between lines. BOP BOMP BWAAAAAAH

The loop gives it a good groove, but I'd really like to hear the band play it--it's aching for some tasty variation in the rhythm section.

Yah, I agree on the drums. It was mostly to show the fellas that a soul groove would work if the rest of us stayed off the 1. It really does need some big fills and stops. Also the organ really needs to groove on the offbeat rather than dance around like it does.

I did an acoustic version of this today at a little local thing and everyone was singing along with the hoo-hoo-hoo-ooo backing part which was fun... I guess it could be horns but I actually heard someone singing that part in the parking lot afterwards so I guess it must be the hook.
