Where No One Has Gone Before

A little tune about toxic masculinity with a splash of Star Trek.

This lyric—and, even more so, the melodies that go with it—came more easily to me than any other song I've written, and they just kept coming and coming until I'd stuffed three and a half minutes with words without repeating a chorus or taking many breathers for instrumentals.

I've written one or two other songs for or inspired by my girlfriend but this is the first that I feel really gets at why she's special to me.

Yeah! I was rooting for the guitar to get nice and loud and crunchy towards the end, and I got my wish.

Feels top-heavy--all the energy is in the voice and lead guitar figures. More bass would help, I think, and perhaps rhythm guitar or a keyboard to glue stuff together. Regardless, the honest emotion is conveyed well.

Yeah, mixing is not one of my strengths. I only discovered that it was a thing that I really, really have to do like, two songs ago and I'm far from good at it yet. Thanks for the advice, I'll try your suggested tweaks when I feel like revisiting this one again.

It's a black art, for sure. I'm not very good myself, but I know what it should sound like ;)

This is an awesome song, bit of a mini rock opera you've got going on.

Yeah, I have to say I actually like the top-heavy mix too. It's unusual, but it works for me here — reminds me a little bit of Swearing at Motorists.
