The Elevator Clown

From the 12-21-14 Carbon 7 session Inter-Sol-Stice. We went from meeting every couple of months down to 1 or 2 a year, & I fell behind in mixing, so this was somewhat of a forgotten session. A minor epic at 18 minutes, but it holds together.
In the minute leading up to us playing, I managed to record a snippet of conversation -- Dennis: "I hate circus clowns, they're the worst." Ron: "I hate elevators." Dennis: "A circus clown in an elevator would really be the worst." Ron: "A falling elevator." Moments later, Ron struck up the circus theme that drives the track, thus the title.
Music for worrying the neighbors who thought they knew you better than this, discouraging the hens from laying, & generally hastening the immanentization of the eschaton through chaos, dischord & induced entropy.
I had to dump this down to 128k to fit MeFi's file size constraints. Higher bitrate version available here.

Thanks for sharing how the song idea came about. To be honest I don't know much about prog or post-prog rock, but it certainly sounds like it could be a clown caught and freaking out in a space elevator! It's been nice listening to this come up in the MeFi stream while working. I like it when the bass melody rhythm lines up with the snare - it's like a synchronized duet.
Since you mentioned in the tags that this is freeform improvisation, does that mean all of the instruments were recorded together live? That's really cool and I'm impressed by how clean the recording is. Was this all done in a home studio or...?

I set mics up in the practice room, check levels & we go for it. Totally live, no overdubs or edits. One of the keyboards is direct, the other is close-mic'ed & so is the bass amp. The worst bleed is on the drum overhead, but it's not intolerable. I also close mic the kick & floor tom, so 6 tracks, total.
