Summer Follows Redux

Impossible Bookings is a collaboration I kinda sorta foisted upon cicadaverse, who initially posted the instrumental version of this track 6 months ago. I put words to what he'd created, we each reworked what we had into shorter form, he remixed my vocals and added to the instrumentation...then life happened to us both. We caught up recently after a few months off, remastered it, and called it good. [more inside]

1+1=3 by @Ummagma

Space has long been a stimulator for creative outlet in nearly every sphere of human activity, music being no exception. In this track, it is clearly front and centre, whether it for you brings an association with the cosmos or you internal realm. Happy listening.

Titry / Live and Let Die

Let's throw in a juxtaposition in sonic terms just for the sake of diversity. Here is a free download of Ummagma 'Titry', alongside one right here for 'Live and Let Die'. The first is an instrumental folky track somewhat like Peter, Bjorn and John's 'Young Folks' crossed with Tortoise (with their more upbeat side of postrock). The second is also upbeat in the best shoegazey dreamy fashion - but with ethereal yet solid vocals... Enjoy both :) [more inside]

Blizzard

This is one of those "let's drift away" songs... hazy gazey spacey and dreamy all in one… If one is prone to daydreaming or aural hypnosis, this may not be the song for you :) Just the same, this is definitely worth a listen to all others. This is Sounds of Sputnik.

The Mission

Whenever someone writes cross-genre, it always leaves you wondering what flavor their potpourri will take. When you see post-rock and shoegaze together, you might also have an idea of what you'll be hearing, but throw a piano in there, and you've caught everybody off kilter. That's what this song does, but nicely so. [more inside]

Visualization

Everybody likes music for partying mode, but what happens afterwards? This song would be the perfect accompaniment for the comedown afterwards (and even the hangover). Chill, centered, reflective, harmonious. I think :) [more inside]

1+1=3 (revisited)

Some songs take you on a trip (and bring you back), while others just send you drifting endlessly and blissfully. For us, this song belongs to the latter, building layers of layers of sound and effects - like new galaxies being opened. [more inside]

Astronomical Summer 2

The pulsing drive of this tune unquestionably has a swaying effect and, taken together with this song's layers and subtleties seems to make all the difference. Sway sway sway!!! [more inside]

Talk to Her

If you were to roll up some element of Brian Eno, Robert Fripp and Bill Nelson, and paint it with a slight shoegaze ethereal hue, this might be what you would get… Enjoy this Ummagma track! [more inside]

This instrumental explores not only ambiences and walls-of-sound seemingly inspired directly by cosmic travels, but also features electronics, samples, drones, and beautifully melodies peppered with a lot of dissonance, creating sonic tapestries perfectly suited for reflecting, reading an Arthur C. Clarke (or Isaac Asimov) book and taking a journey through the stars. This is Sounds of Sputnik.

Motoroller

The smooth fusion of dream pop and shoegaze is always something I welcome and a goal that is always in sight in the case of this song by Sounds of Sputnik - perhaps this is what is meant by the term nugaze - somewhat of a reshaping of the heavier dirtier shoegaze sounds dating back to the early 1990s a la My Bloody Valentine and Medicine. This reminds of of some of Kevin Shields' lighter work that he's done for various soundtracks. How do you see it?

The Mission

Space rock is a term that is often over-used for various psychrock tunes, but it is dead on for this track from Sounds of Sputnik. Or space post-rock or even space post-rock shoegaze. Looking forward to your take on that.

Ambiguous Sense of the Future

Post-rock always seems embedded with the sense that something is dire; however, shake it up a bit to get a kind of post-rock indie shoegaze vinaigrette and Sounds of Sputnik is likely what you would come up with. This is Ambiguous Sense of the Future.

Adaptation

Soundscapes are part of the fabric for various genres of music and this song creates one merging several genres, yet is still hard to put your finger on.

J.S. Bach

Inspired by the great man himself - J.S. Bach - this song presents a modern interpretation, stemming into interpretation, of this great piece. By Ummagma [more inside]

1+1=3

The shoegaze scene is really abuzz this year with so much good music out there, the new MBV album and Medicine's reunion. This song vibes in this same department - it's an instrumental with lots of reverb. What do you think of this track?

Chromatic Satori

For the January challenge, fellow mefite mahershalal and I came up with this little number. Kind of a jazz-influenced instrumental shoegaze number, I guess. [more inside]
