Another dumb singer
I’m a quietish singer, to play (in three days) a long, small room with an ungreat PA system, manipulated by an inexperienced engineer. What, in two sentences, could I tell him that might help me get my voice across? [more inside]
IRL now ready for gigs!
So I thought it might be worth mentioning this over here specifically: the new meetups-and-such subsite we've been working on, IRL, is officially ready to host non-traditional meetup stuff like, well, music gigs. [more inside]
Challenge Idea: Burlesque Music
Listening to Ring My Bell: Tango made me wonder: could we have a MeFi Music challenge for songs to burlesque to? [more inside]

The Joy of the End of Summer
Summer is waning. School is starting. Joy is in the air for those meeting up with old school friends.

Leonard Cohen Night - BBC4 19th June
Irony of ironies, there's a Leonard Cohen night on BBC4 tonight (19th June). Several programmes strung together including last year's Live In London show. Those of you living in the colonies can access this via the online BBC iPlayer, I should imagine. I feel duty bound to watch given my recent desecration of Hallethingy.....enjoy!!
Help a singer/guitarist be a one man band
I'm a singer & guitarist who loves playing live, I usually play at open mic nights, but now and again I like to try and push myself to get out there and put together gigs of my own. One thing I find is once I get past playing about 6 songs, I am looking for a little more variation than just my voice and guitar.
I'm thinking either of playing backing tracks, or playing more instruments as I play the guitar. Does anyone already do this? What are the simplest things I could add to give myself more options? Are there tricks for keeping it my gig and not sounding like I'm tied to a backing track? [more inside]
performance, equipment
Getting ready to start performing around town. [more inside]
Live Sound Perfection
I went to see Cardinals in Birmingham (Carling Academy) last night, and was (once again) blown away at the quality of their live sound. It was LOUD, possibly too loud at times, but I left with no ringing in my ears at all. Nor did my wife or our friends, none of whom frequent loud gigs. How is this possible? [more inside]
Just like Ashlee Simpson!
I'm toying with the idea of playing live again (after more than a decade of staying in the house) and I'd like to gather opinions from all of you: at which point do "backing tracks" become "cheating"? [more inside]
