Can you make requests?

While I can flail away slightly at the banjo, I am not past the 2-chord stage and can't manage to play and sing at the same time, which seems like wizardry. There's a teeny >20-second song I'd like to make for a thing I'm doing in July. Can I ask, or is that out of place for MeFi Music? [more inside]

Latency

Up to now I've always used stand-alone DAWs (Yamaha AW2400, for instance). Recognising the need to step up the quality of percussion in my recordings, I've gone with NI Studio Drummer (thanks to unSane for his ever-helpful advice). It's an exciting Aladdin's cave of goodies and I'm looking forward to it making a big sonic difference - sounds terrific. However......latency is immediately apparent and not something I've ever had to deal with before. Wondering whether running this software on a bog-standard Acer laptop in Windows is part of the problem? Any tips and fixes for latency anyone?

Oblique Strategies....

Came across a reference to this the other day and followed up. Wikipedia succinctly elucidates thus: "Oblique Strategies (subtitled over one hundred worthwhile dilemmas) is a set of published cards created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt first published in 1975, and is now in its fifth, open ended, edition. Each card contains a phrase or cryptic remark which can be used to break a deadlock or dilemma situation. Some are specific to music composition; others are more general. Examples include: - Use an old idea. - State the problem in words as clearly as possible. - Only one element of each kind. - What would your closest friend do? - What to increase? What to reduce? - Are there sections? Consider transitions. - Try faking it! - Honour thy error as a hidden intention. - Ask your body. - Work at a different speed. Here's a clip of Eno explaining matters to the thoroughly splendid Mr Jarvis Cocker. There's also this website that allows you access to randomly selected cards. [more inside]

Keyboard Workstations and DAWS

How well do keyboard workstations like Tritons / Motifs / etc. play with DAWs like Sonar / Reaper / ProTools in terms of MIDI / sequencing? If I have a sweet sound in my keyboard how do I bring that into my DAW and then susequently edit time / duration / velocity in the DAW? How does the DAW ultimately record the sounds from the synth? I am confused between audio vs. midi and how these two play together.

Phasing problem - advice sought

Need a steer from the more technically adept amongst the crew. If I use peripherals with my machine (Yamaha AW2400) I often get a horrible tinny sound - difficult to describe in words, but I think it's some kind of phasing problem. The signal route is: a feed out of the DAW, into the box (Lexicon reverb unit, for instance), then back into the input channels of the DAW, control via "Aux" faders. So....the "treated" signal is being mixed back in with the original, and I think this is where the problem lies. I can't lose the original signal without also losing the "treated" one. The DAW has a phase reverse facility that I've used, but I still get at least a touch of that horrible metallic thinned-out sound. What the fuck is going on? And any ideas about a cure?
