The Night We Shot Bingo Elvis

January 30, 2011 9:07 PM

A sordid tale of greed, revenge, and bingo.

The incredibly talented wordsmith Shepherd provided the concept for the song as well as the amazingly twisted story that he narrated.

I just followed his lead and tried my hand at writing some music that would do justice to the tale of the Night We Shot Bingo Elvis.

Enjoy!

It was fun! baxter_ilion set me up with some musical "sketches" to listen to, which inspired me to rewrite the title story; I built a sort of dummy track by looping a guitar chord. baxter_ilion then wrote a real track -- drums, guitar, piano, vocals -- to back the actual recorded story, which inspired me in turn to re-record the story to better suit the track. Which inspired baxter to re-record the music, and finally, drop in the chorus and mix.

I was supposed to contribute more audio stuff but have had laryngitis since last Tuesday, which nuked my ability to record anything at all.

What a great experience!

Damn, this is good. Kinda reminds me of something I heard a long time ago on Dr. Dimento (maybe Zappa?) Holy shit this is great.

For some reason those "ooh ooh" backup vocals are hilarious in the context of this story. They're so sincere!

And a great ending, too.

I love this. This reminds me of the rare awesome things I'd hear on my walkman on CBC Radio while working the late shift and remember for years before I had internet access and any means to track it down. Or a story by Gordie Lachance that wasn't included in the final cut of Stand By Me. Great job.
