Bridge In The Sky

August 26, 2007 3:15 AM

Fellow wants to cross a bridge, but it floats up into the sky. Woman comes along but she turns into smoke. Fellow throws a fistfull of dirt in the air, gets a new idea, goes and does some other stuff. Then there's a happy ending. Written for the "bridge" challenge, but I reckon you knew that already. Guitar by Ken Kawashima, who can also be heard here and here. Lyrics inside.

BRIDGE IN THE SKY

i was just about to cross the bridge
cause i'd heard on the other side of the river
having fun is allowed
but then the bridge started to tremble
and slowly levitate
it floated up into the sky
and was swallowed by a cloud

i saw a woman in the pouring rain
but somehow she stayed dry as a bone
she looked just as peaceful as the buddha
sitting on a lotus throne
her eyes turned into sapphires
her body turned into smoke
somehow i just couldn't stop laughing
it was like she'd told me the perfect joke

i threw a handful of dirt in the air
it spread out and blocked out the sun
but in the darkness i could see the shadow of the bridge
and i knew what had to be done
if i was ever gonna get across
i'd have to get myself up to the sky
and remembering what they'd taught me
back in sunday school
i knew i was gonna have to die

so i set off walking through the woods
til i came to the railroad track
i laid down there looked around at the world
i said i ain't never coming back
and sure enough after awhile
along come a big old train
but just then i saw that bridge come down
come down from the sky like rain

and coming down with that bridge there was that woman
the very same one that i thought had vanished away
i got myself up off of that railroad track
and i'm still yes i'm still with that woman today

i knew i was gonna have to die, wow, you guys were walking the tightrope there for a sec, but you pulled it off. Sweet. It's good stuff when your more modern/contemporary sounding voice works with Ken's blues guitar. I likes it.

Just an aside, but I've been learning about resonator guitars recently. Maybe you should get Ken one for his birthday or something. (I only mention it because these songs that you guys do together would just jump to another level in the pantheon.)

impressive. You should teach writing classes too... Your voice really flows with ease and keeps the text alive. But I'd like to hear some phrases in a lower register too. Thanks flapjax.

Thanks for your comments, folks, I appreciate them very much, and I'm glad to know that these words and sounds are finding their way into the ears of the behearer!

And gomichild, that would be Jameson Irish whiskey if funds are tight, Macallan 12-year-old if things are going a little better, and if it's been a really good month, Lagavulin.
