A song about race and baseball.

Words:

10:05, Mr. Workman’s class, he’ll give you the answers to the test if you let him rub your back underneath your shirt. Kelly walks into the room, a swagger that denies his stature; denies the fact that we caught him lettin’ a calf suck him off last year. And he says, “Your cousin’s dead, read it in the paper. I met him at the fair he looked like Rod Carew.”

And all I can think about is 3000 hits in one career, seven steals of home in 1969. In Panama he’s a hero and he’ll never be forgotten. Rod Carew plays for the Angels. Rod Carew plays for the Angels.

In the back of your closet there’s a box with another one in it and on top of the box is a dusty pair of shoes. The ones you used to wear when you wanted to feel special, you wanted to go out dancing and maybe lose yourself. And inside the box is a newspaper clipping, a picture of a boy it’s easier to forget.

In Panama he’s a hero and he’ll never be forgotten, seven batting titles to his name. Voted onto 18 straight All-Star teams, Rod Carew played for the Angels. Rod Carew played for the Angels.

And I wonder if he wondered what blood was supposed to do. And I wonder what he looked like that boy that I never knew.

Rod Carew played for the Angels. Rod Carew played for the Angels. Rod Carew played for the Angels.

--Sometimes I listen to this song and like it, sometimes it makes me wince because it seems pedantic. I can’t guarantee what your reaction will be. I also think I need to redo the vocals while sober.--

Nah, man, your voice sounds good. But what I really like are the lyrics and the story. Good stuff.

A sober anything by me here might be a good thing, cortex...

Thanks, snsranch, for the comment. I've been worried about the lyrics a bit, mainly because they just seem too much, but as my songwriting partner keeps telling me, "You just work too much in surrealism. Reality is a good thing once in awhile." Or something like that. It's all a part of a bigger story I'll one day foist upon the world. I'm glad they were good to you. That means quite a bit.

Not pedantic at all. These lyrics are smart, beautiful and intriguing. I love songs like this. It's brilliant! Thank you for posting it.

Although I will go out on a limb and say you SHOULD re-record it sober so we can understand it better. I'd have missed a lot if you hadn't posted the lyrics. It sounds great, though, it's just a little hard to understand ya.

I'm looking forward to hearing the bigger story.
