I haven't heard this song since college, so I have no cogent comparisons to offer -- but I really like the hushedness of this, the way sometimes I really had to pay attention to even realize you're singing -- I dunno if that was purposeful or not -- but the way it insists that I lean in and listen is pretty arresting.

Great song, nicely done cover, but yeah the vocals fade totally out in some places which I think is kind of too bad. I will take that back if you were really drunk when you recorded it, which would be totally appropriate and would explain the variable distance from the mic.
