Sentimental Cover Suggestions

ISO sickeningly sentimental children's movie songs

It started with The Rainbow Connection, continued to Not In Nottingham, escalated to Somewhere Out There, and finally sent into overtime by Cheer Up Charlie, I'm looking for songs of such sentimental greatness and similar audience recognition.

Background:
My roomate is a singer songwriter of great talent who hosts an occasional open mic. We have traded off such sentimental hits since my first attendance and we both wish for the duel to continue.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I would make a more than valiant effort to post the good requests.

"Hushabye Mountain", from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", fits the bill, and has a strong melody as well.

Carrying on with the Jewish Mouse franchise: "Dreams to Dream" from Fievel Goes West has all the soaring sentimentality of the first one's anthem.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who feels some sort of compulsion to sing "Not In Nottingham", btw.

I'm sure cortex could do a phenomenal version of "Not in Nottingham" and I'd like to hear one.

"Dreams to Dreams" is perfect for this. The indulgent chord structures, undermotivated key changes, the dazzling melodrama, the hilarious vocal inflections. Of course Linda does fine work of tackling the melody. I think I'll have a go at this one.

I've never heard "Hushabye" before and it's a fine tune indeed, thanks. "Rainbow" is definitely a classic. I think there is a certain musical difference between these and the subtle joke me and my friend keep running. There is a harmonically indulgent structure in comparison to popular hits that was evident in the Hollywood soundtrack songs of the recently bygone era of the early 7o's - mid 90's. A big part of the fun is figuring out the chords for these songs. It's much harder than the typical pop tune.

Of course, in my pool of suggestions, "Not in Nottingham" is a very simple song harmonically but it makes up for it by having a particularly evocative melody.

Part of Your World from the Little Mermaid. Also a whole wealth of christmas movie songs, but perhaps you should hold off on those for six months.

There's a song called Why Do I Do It? somewhere in this dramatic retelling of the The Tale of Peter Rabbit, narrated by Vivien Leigh, which might be the sort of thing you're looking for. You just need to find it.
