Femme Fatale (VN+U Cover)
July 31, 2009 7:42 PM
Just getting this under the wire for July's music challenge; it's not quite August 1st, at least not where I live.
We were holding out as long as we could, waiting for my wife's voice to come back, and it almost made it. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy this very mellow take on what is already a very mellow song. All Garageband and my Mac's internal microphone, except for the backing vocals -- used a Rock Band microphone for those.

YES! It definitely works in a pinch, and you don't need any additional software or hardware to get it to work. It's quite sensitive, albeit noisy--but noise reduction is easy enough. We actually recorded our entire first album on a pair of Rock Band mics (that was interesting because we did have to use two separate computers in order to do so).
Back on topic, I thought this was a great version. As you said, a mellow take on an already pretty mellow song. However, as I have stated many times in the past, ANYTHING is better when it doesn't have Nico singing it.

Nice! I like the mellow groove thing a lot—reworking a lot of the melody really sort of sells it for me. One of the weird things about the original (in my opinion) is the way it's got this sort of lounge-y feel to the arrangement and Nico's lead vocals, but the melody itself and the callback vox on the choruses feel much more like straight up pop stuff. Kind of a weird clash. I went for trying to just make it a little bit bigger and louder on mine, and I like that you went the other way.
Those swooping "ahhhs" on the backing vox are great. Totally dreamy feel. And your wife's callbacks with the little bit of shakiness are super fucking charming in context.

Hey, very nice job. It's a charming, warm take, and I dig that loungey keyboard. Nice vocal melody choices too.

Funny, I didn't hear any violins or ukuleles...
Congrats on getting it in under the wire, davejay!
