Silver Lining

A low fi version of the Stiff Little Fingers song that somehow feels appropriate for this New Year.

Tried to get this going as a cover for Red On Strike and it didn't work out, but I like this version with me on vocals, Red getting a feel for the chorus, and Steve pounding the bass. We probably could have used Mike to keep us in time, but the sloppiness makes me smile.

They tell you not to worry
They say they're terrible sorry
But that's the way it has to be
For the likes of you and me, you see
Just be good and know your station
Always look on the bright side
Keep your faith and keep your patience
Your reward is after you've died, so

(chorus)
Don't be told, don't be consoled, I said
Things are so bad you could never make do
And there's always someone better off than you

They tell you that your future
It's all down to human nature
Simply settle for what you've got
That's destiny and that's your lot
All of us can not come first
And yes, you'll have the second best
But it might be a good deal worse
Third world peasants get even less, so

(chorus)

Do you care that it's not fair?
Is that the way it's supposed to be?
I know I care, and I'm owed an equal share
Even if it means I have to give

The people who are on top
Say that you should keep your chin up and
They are keen to show you
The unhappy ones below you
But I want no more of that stuff
That's looking at it upside down
And the world has got money enough
For us to make it go around, so

Don't be told, don't be consoled, I said
Don't be ruled, and don't be fooled
Because things are so bad you could never make do
And there's always someone better off than you
