March Mefi Music Challenge

March 3, 2011 7:52 AM

The challenge for this month, as suggested by moonmilk, is to make an educational or instructive song.

History lesson? Teach us how to make an apple pie? Have some unusual knowledge that you would like to empart upon us? Bring it baby and have fun!

(Please forgive my delay in posting, been sick in bed for days!)

I'm hoping someone can teach me how to do The Crusher

Wow, great idea, moonmilk!

I'm bummed I didn't have time to do anything for last month's Challenge. Really hoping to get one together for this month's.

And sorry to hear you've been sick, sns. Hope you're all better now.

As far as an educational song... maybe someone can finally tell Blind Blake (and the rest of us) what Diddie Wa Diddie means...

Challenge added! I have no idea where last month went, I loved the challenge idea.

Thank you flapjax and cortex. I'm still a bit deef in one ear (had a long running ear/sinus infection) but I'm back in the saddle. Hooray!

Good call moonmilk/sns - this appeals to the pedant lurking in my blackened soul.

I really must pull my socks up and have a pop at this one. I've only been a fleeting visitor for the last couple of months, but looking at the current state of MeFiMu (only 2 playlisted tracks in the last 7 days) I think, gentlemen, a call to arms is required. "England expects" et cetera. Clearly you may substitute England for one of the colonies or somewhere similarly foreign if you insist (inserts monocle, lights evil-smelling cigar and reaches irascibly for The Times....)

One off-the-cuff thought in terms of revivifying things would maybe be to put together a collaborative track for the March Challenge. To be called "Did You Know??".

Over a ripely cheesy jazz-rawk backing (or some kind of looped dance thing) everyone contributes one abstruse, absurd or fascinating little fact when cued by one of those rich American radio announcer voices (Walter Cronkite?) saying "Did you know??". Contributions can be sung or spoken - whatever. Needs a slightly scratchy, crackly mix - so it hints at some kind of educational record from the 1950's. Might be fun. Might be shit.

Here's an example "Did you know? that Major Dundee's ideas generally are just a bit, well, hhhmmm...". Forget it :-))

"Did you know?" sounds like fun to me and not terribly labor intensive. MD, are you up to compiling and mixing contributions?

I don't have much spare time at the moment sns, and wouldn't want to commit and then let eveyone down. It was just a fleeting thought anyway - no sweat.

I want ORthey to teach us how to make some good sourdough bread!

Hey, that's alright Dundee, I thought that was a great idea. Here's a did you know: Did ya know that for a time in Europe people blackened their teeth for fashion and prestige? It's true. For a while it was considered fashionable to have rotten-ass teeth because it illustrated that one was rich enough to afford sugary treats. Those who didn't faked having bad teeth by blackening them with charcoal, wax and other means.

I was totally thinking about doing that. I probably have to now.

I only just noticed this challenge, so I guess I'm too late to the party to contribute anything; but I like the idea so much that I'm going to do it anyway.

Hey all,

I'm not sure if I did this correctly. I've never posted music here. (I mostly hang out at AskMeFi.) I just found out about this challenge about an hour ago, and this was the first thing that come to mind. I hope this is okay.

Do I post the song here?

Thanks!
