For a Little While I Was Free

March 22, 2011 4:36 PM

Over the last few days, at a former elementary school on the island of Awajishima, I recorded a number of songs. This one is the newest of those: written on the train out of Tokyo on 3/17 and recorded on 3/18, in a rather reverberant hallway/stairwell. Video here.

FOR A LITTLE WHILE I WAS FREE

i fell down a flight of stairs
there you were at the bottom
you said stand up baby
come take a walk with me
we strolled past the graveyards
the freight yards and the junk yards
you stopped and said now baby
i'm gonna set you free
and sure enough
for a little while i was free

the sun was sinking low
behind the slag heaps and the power lines
just as my banjo baby fell off my knee
then the night fell like a stage curtain
the audience started screaming
screaming sammy now we're gonna set you free
and sure enough
for a little while i was free

i took the long way home
through the back streets
passed a hundred thousand shadows
reached my front door
but couldn't find my key
started walking toward the airport
thought maybe i'd catch a plane
the midnight sky whispered
now i'm gonna set you free
and sure enough
for a little while i was free
