Time to Get Up

February 28, 2012 1:15 PM

I don't know why I keep going back to this song I wrote when I was 17, but here's new version of Time to Get Up that I recorded yesterday. Starts slow, but includes lots of organ, a little cardboard box banging percussion and Leah Wilmoth's reverb'd out harmonies. Recorded on a Zoom H2. Wear headphones.

lovely.

cardboard box percussion sounds good, and the reverb'd out harmonies are excellent. I'll have to revisit the earlier versions now.

Thanks dubold! Listening again, I did a strange process I'd never done before to raise the song's volume and it appears to have turned the background fuzz into this distracting, flickering fuzz. Sorry about that.

I really liked hearing the earlier versions, made me think a lot about the usefulness of multiple recordings in existence, rather than an album which has a "definitive version" and maybe some bootlegs if the band is popular enough. However, your song thread is probably not the place for a long diatribe on creating ephemera in the perception of recorded work...

I agree, dubold. Many of my favorite musicians include alternate versions on their records (the Microphones and Sun Kil Moon come to mind). I like to think of them as reminders that there are no 'good' songs; just 'good' recordings or performances or memories.

Yes, exactly! For me, the most eye-opening stuff to hear was Beatles outtakes or alternate versions. Especially the really off-the-cuff stuff that was nothing close to their other finished tracks. it helped in the realization that songs don't spring fully formed from the head of Zeus; there's work involved, and multiple versions, and takes that may have one or two great elements but just don't quite come together.

If anyone is interested in the quieter version of the song without the strange, pulsating background fuzz, message me.
