A Game of Chess

May 1, 2012 11:29 AM

The sophomore track/movement in my concept album/piece, built around The Wasteland. Finalizing the mix took a bit longer than expected, so I didn't get it in before the deadline for the challenge. Boo. Nevertheless, Expect some surprises.

Some very small liberties have been taken with the text, in order to a) ensure maximum read-out-loud-ability, b) make certain that no one tried to do a bad fake English accent (see: the author), and c) to guarantee that none of my narrators had to suffer through saying something as ridiculous as "Jug jug."

The glasses aren't technically wine glasses--they're iced tea goblets.

INSTRUMENTATION:
Timbill Corder (me) - Korg MS-10, Glasses, Composer, Arranger, Engineer, Producer
Trey Beauregard - Bass Clarinet, Recordaphone, Male Narrator
Dani Miller - The Sisters
Nightingale samples courtesy of freesound.org

NOTE: The first sentence of this section is, quite easily, the longest, most absurd--albeit still grammatically correct--sentence I've ever inflicted upon someone else to read aloud. Notice, it starts at 0:28, and doesn't end until 1:15. It has TWO semicolons! When I typed the script, I cursed MSWord for refusing to underline the damned thing in green, for I knew he was technically correct--which, as we all know, is the best form of correct. It takes so many takes that, by the time you get it right, you forget how to say or read other words.

That sentence has all the words.

I liked the slow growing intensity of the horns against the calm reading of this good poem.

Thanks! I was hoping to accomplish a very different feel, while still featuring the same instruments (and indeed even the same speaker) at the end as the beginning--by building from a calm discussion to a shout and a scream. Fortunately, my new bass clarinet is great for screaming, and Trey (man vs sun) knows how to make it do so quite well.

It's got a good beat and you can dance to it; also it sounds like a puppy is being tortured.

I suppose I should give proper, full credit to the author of the Nightingale samples. They are spectacular.
