If We Were Boxes

May 29, 2012 1:54 PM

Written in the form of a Villanelle.

Sort of inhabits the same universe as Worst Things.

Achingly sad. Jeezaus. And pretty. But largely sad. I really dig the form.

(A note about the mix, though: in my tiny headphones the guitars are a bit bright and pokey [maybe in the 2-3.5kHz range?] and step on the vocals a bit when they get loud.)

Yet another fucking song with great harmonies. Screw you guys, i'm goin' home.

Superb mate, please post the lyrics up! Also, was way loud - how did you manage to record it like that? Was it deliberate? Love the guitar too.

Whenever I listen to a chococat song I feel like an idiot with broken fingers and it makes me want to throw all my instruments in a drain ditch. Good job, mate.

Thanks.
The mix was a bit rushed as it was round 5 of a 7 week challenge.

if we were boxes filled with empty space
amongst the useless junk our lives accrue
cassettes without a label or a case

so easy to exist without a face
tell crying tales as if each one were true
if we were boxes filled with empty space

the trick to find the perfect trusting place
inventing troubled people no one knew
cassettes without a label or a case

no reason to retract or to erase
a conscience wouldn't make us think things through
if we were boxes filled with empty space

when all the stories twist and interlace
and everything's so fake it all seems new
cassettes without a label or a case

they'd all be unaware we'd run a race
what power would we gain when we withdrew
if we were boxes filled with empty space
cassettes without a label or a case

I dismissed this thought on first listen, but it keeps coming back: My ear always really, really hopes that last note will turn out something like that of A Theory of Everything or Floyd Pepper's While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The fairly plain and expected not it ends on is just a tiny disappointment.

But just a tiny one. And the only one in this song, which is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.
