If You Want Me To Stay

Another jam (Sly cover) at yet another gig, circa 1994. It would have been totally forgotten and unremarked were it not for the fact that someone taped it.

Bobby G, a phenomenal singer/keyboardist with a powerful left hand that obviates any bass player, wanted me to get my friend Dave to drum on the gig, and I invited myself in on guitar, making for a cool little trio. Then Jeff came by on sax and this guy Angel brought in his percussion rig. So it was a five piece band when Bobby launched into If You Want Me To Stay. Despite having heard the song many times, the rest of us had never actually played it before, which did not prevent us from having a good time or stop people from dancing. Someone had a little cassette recorder with built-in condenser mics and taped a few songs that night. Eventually I ended up with the cassette, which I only just listened to after all these years! It's just a jam, but I think it sounds pretty great and had to share!

He has a great voice, made me think (a bit) of Alexander O'Neal, but maybe it is because he was on the radio the other day!
