Face of Appalachia

April 1, 2013 3:57 PM

Discovered that my new Focusrite will covert old cassettes to digital. This is from around 1978, my friend Karen and I covering a Lowell George and John Sebastian song that I learned off a Valerie Carter album.

Noisy, but some good listening, hopefully.

I think it's really interesting how certain vocal stylings are really evocative of an era... her vocals sound "seventies" to me, which I like. thanks for posting this.

Totally. Like a Joan Baez/Linda Ronstadt hybrid or something.
I think it's the vibrato and the sort of low, rich warm tone. And the ability to confidently hold a note without doing any of the runs (or "over-souling," as Aretha calls it) that are so prevalent now.
Really great voice.
Are you still friends with her?

Yes. I really want to record again with her, but not sure how into it she will be. We live about 5 hours away from one another.
