Karma Police (at the Disco) (instrumental)

June 6, 2013 3:08 PM

An unfinished instrumental bed from the Radiohead challenge way back when. A real mess any way you slice it.

Since under_petticoat_rule suggested it (sort of), here it is. Feel free to add your vocals or re-record the thing or whatever. I'd be happy to bounce stems if you really want to play with it.

108bpm, key of Am, should be an eighth note lead-in before the music starts, but who knows what the MP3 conversion did to it.

Oh ... huh, that'd work too, sure.

I don't know what my thing with disco is lately, or last year, or whenever. During the Hallelujah challenge, I had a whole "Disco-lujah" thing worked out, in the style of Tom Jones. It would have been "glorious."

"I heard there was a hot dance floor / where the chicks are loose and the coke is pure / but you don't really care for discos, do ya / It's over at / 54th and 5th / I'll pick you up if you need a lift / we won't come back til dawn / from Disco-lujah"

Yeah, this whole thing was really an excuse for some sweet syn-tom action. I never did find quite the right sample, actually.

Also, the break at 1:38 was, no joke, supposed to be filled with a chorus of female voices speaking, "Karma Po-lice, Karma Po-lice, uh!" in syncopation.
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
- - Kar ma Po lice - - Kar ma Po lice - - - -
- - Kar ma Po lice - - Kar ma Po lice - - UH-

Logic ... but like I said, if anybody really wants to play with this, I'll bounce the stems or render the tracks. Eventually.

Sounds great. I especially love how you arranged the spiraly transition motif part (after "this is what you get…") for the string section, works really well.

I had the same problem when I did the Ring My Bell cover, the original of which had the Synare all over it (they were all over every disco song for a year or two.) I couldn't find a sample anywhere so I faked it on the Moog.
You can find Synares on eBay, but mostly new knock-offs.

Oh man, I don't have string samples with the right articulations, but I really wanted to do that syrupy, legato-slide-to-staccato thing a lot of disco strings do.

Better than the new Daft Punk disco album! No really, this is great fun. Thanks for posting it. Off to practice some cheesy dance moves in my office.
