What Was That Sound I Heard

April 24, 2014 8:56 PM

A song concerning the September 15, 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in my hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. I made a video of historic photo images to accompany the song, which may be viewed here.

Your voice is such a chameleon. Funky as good lawd one moment, plaintive and broken the next. You are a clever old stick.

Haha! Thanks, greenish. Although I'm not sure "clever" is the right descriptor. I gotta think, if I was really clever, I'd have an actual fan base, and I'd be making a living (100%) as a musician.

I think I'm not quite clever enough, actually.

This is one of my favorite songs of yours that I've heard -- I guess I like the more subdued style of this, obviously also very fitting for the serious subject matter. Beautiful vocal delivery and production. It sounds really "full" despite the stripped down nature of the music. Really good stuff!

Many thanks for your kind comment, edlundart. I do value simplicity and stripped down arrangements, somehow, the older I get, and I'm gratified to hear comments like yours that reinforce my thinking and give me more of a notion that I'm on the right track.
