Deep Sea (for Neko Case)

The first in a series of tunes I'm doing in the styles of my favorite songwriters. This one was written and performed in the style of Neko Case.

I've been trying to get into songwriting from a while, and something about the process seems completely opaque when you're coming at it from the angle of having been trained to compose concert music. I thought that part of the way to put that inability to even get started aside was to just unabashedly ape the songwriting styles of other people, both because it would give me structure and because it would be freeing to make stylistic choices I might be afraid of otherwise if it was my own voice I was trying to hone. I'm pretty happy with how this turned out, although I realized that I'm just not really able to imitate Neko Case's vocal style to any meaningful degree and so I just tried to settle into a timbre that felt appropriate and doable for me instead. That will be much less of a problem for me with the next in the series, which is after Scott Walker...:)

Nailed it, your voice and the slide sound wonderful.

Nice work. I find myself doing this unconsciously sometimes, not realizing who I'm channeling until the song is nearly complete. If it's a good songwriter, I'm happy. Also: your voice would work for a Fred Neil soundalike.

Oh, this is gorgeous! Impeccable imitation, gorgeous in its own right. :)
