Crawl

The weirdest song on my new record. Unrelated harmonies, weird backwards noise, weird melody, weird guitar solos. Tried to make the production fit, though.

This is really good. The verses sound a bit like if John Lennon was back from the dead and got angry and started a new band.

Um, cortex - you couldn't have found a nicer thing to say. Bottomless gratitude.

I really like this, especially the guitar tone on the first bit of solo.

Does it say anything about me that I don't find this song particularly weird? I blame Liars (among others) for warping my definition of "weird" when it comes to music.

I'm really diggin' this.

Nice. I'd like to hear your lead voice more naturally--like the "I keep crawling" parts (which I like very much!)

OK, I just listened to the CDBaby clips. Yeah. I get the production here. In that context, it fits better for me. Great work!

sparkletone - didn't mean to pass judgement with the "weird" classification. I was trying out some different harmonies - mostly unrelated chords - as well as strange melody notes - and apparently feeling a little self-concious about it ;-).

nonmyopicdave - I was going for contrast between the verses and the choruses - in the different drum grooves and in the fact that the bass plays a particular line during the verse but just chugs along with eighth notes on the chorus. Since the verse-melody uses some less than obvious notes, I thought I could sell it a little better by effecting the voice alot - and then the whole thing could clean up for the chorus. That was the goal, anyway...

I'm still dying to hear just a little more detail when you stretch up to those G's: "droooown" "meeercilously"

Also, you know, you've got Steeley Dan-like progressions that don't sound, like, totally random at all. It flows. That Bbm should jar and it doesn't. That's tricky.

And dead on. I really think the beginning of the song sounds just like that. It also sounds a bit Belewesque to me. Your stuff is always tremendously produced. I think you are one of the very few who actually records the music posted here in actual studios, for actual records. It is really cool that you go through all that trouble and still post it for free here.

Thanks alot, micayetoca. The songs I've posted here so far have all come from a record that I obsessed over for a long time - I finally finished it last fall. I've been posting a song a week since I began (two more left after this one!), and it has been an invaluable experience - it's so great to get feedback. I reckon that once I'm done I'll resort to posting things that are less complete, as I begin to assemble music for another recording.

In the meantime, if y'all will forgive a little business - anyone so inclined should mosey on over to cdbaby and/or amazon and leave a review - I'm desperately trying to build up a profile for myself, and every little bit helps - can be as long or as short as you'd like. I've also posted a list on my myspace page of radio stations that are playing my music - if anyone is so inclined, drop one or some of them a line and request that they play my music.

I hope that little bit of business isn't out of line... Thanks very much for listening, everybody.

I'm not the admin, but I don't think the plug is out of line at all, especially considering your posting generosity.

So far I've liked practically everything you've posted, and I've checked out your other links as well.
