My friend Dan and I apply the guitar and recording implements to hastily collected drippings from his subconscious.

Big old smile on my face. The chatter on either side of the mix is just right in the mix: loud enough to be present, not so loud as to distract from the song.

Feels like the last track on an album.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. If we have any aim at all in recording, it's to bring a big old smile to some faces, primarily our own. This will be the last track on our album O How the Seasons Change, The Seasons Rejoice (And Other Pretentious Bullshit) to be completed sometime before we die.

I'm particularly glad the conversations sit in the mix appropriately, because the one aspect of recording I don't get is mixing and EQing. I read Tape Op, own books, read tutorials, but it's just never clicked for me.

Some people just really get mixing; the rest of us have to fake it. One of the most frustrating parts of any busy recording, for me, is the sort of ear-blindness that comes from working and working and working on a track. I've gotten to the point where I just mix fast, say good enough, have my wife do a spit-take listen, and then tweak anything that sounds just plain off to her. (Unless it's off on purpose.)

I still never feel like I know if I've gotten it just right, but that gets me to 90% with almost none of the grief.

I want to film something just so I can have this play in it.

Yeah. Hell yeah. Same here. That's my worst trait -- I crank it up too much, I get too immersed in the mixing, I end up getting so used to how it *should* sound (my brain seems to auto-correct flaws and I miss what others hear), that I miss doing it just so. And Tape Op and other resources never seem to make enough sense for me to get the damn mixing right.

On top of that, cool little song. You had me at "steampunk."
