Hold Me Tight [The Beatles]
July 6, 2007 9:32 AM
In hono(u)r of the anniversary of the nucleus of the Beatles coming together, I bring you a cover of a song that both Lennon and McCartney derided as not all that good, but I always kinda liked. Maybe tomorrow, I'll upload my version of "Twist and Shout." :-)

When I read your "brief description" on the front page of music I thought I should record a first-take, guitar and voice version of the Norwegian Wood version I know in Punjabi. Then I listened to your song and realized that you actually put some effort on it, so I won't. And I guess this is a complicated way of saying "hey, cool, it doesn't sound sloppy or bad at all!"

I don't know the original, but the "you, you, you" thing is kind of a tricky play: it sounds pretty lazy at first, but then the move to "you...don't know what it means..." justifies it structurally. So it gets that Ah, Clever thing going for it, but it still feels a bit cloying as a writing exercise. But this is all stuff that John and Paul probably argued to death already.
Regardless, it's a damned fun recording. And I like the bit of not-Beatles rock yell in there.

Paul could definitely get his rock n' roll yell on with the best of them, when necessary. (cf. "Twist and Shout", "Helter Skelter", "Revolution", et al.) Just sayin'.

Oh yeah, and this is a kick-ass cover. Just a dash of the ol' punk rock DIY sound to keep it interesting.

Oh, not to deny Paul is own classic brand of holler; but grubi's emphatic "IT FEELS! SO! RIGHT!" at about the 3/4 mark feels inescapably—and refreshingly—modern. Maybe I'm chasing at ghosts, but there's something there, I swear.
And take a look at this plate! This plate, right here! Do you see these beans?!

Oh, those aren't beans, man. They are, however, of the legume family.
