Life Through Veils

March 6, 2008 7:30 PM

Old recording from 1990. Music Recorded live, with the middle section and ending being written extemporaneously in the studio, vocals are the only overdubs. Originally 24 track, but this was rescued from cassette, hence the crap quality. I wrote the music and the singer wrote the words and melody. I sang backup.

I just realized it'd been a long time since I'd added a song to MuFi, but it's been a long time since I've written anything, so here's another oldie. Hurlo Thrumbo was a short-lived band from the early 90's that only managed to get 5 songs on tape, 2 of which remain unfinished to this day.

We were trying to do something different, raw, and grungy, with a psychedelic edge -- a few years too soon, unfortunately. Audiences, as per usual with my original bands, fled like cockroaches from the kitchen light the second we started playing. Fail was the only succeed we knew, so we quit. Previously.

Crap quality? Sounds ace over my laptop speakers!

This is cool. The drum recording is actually pretty nice, and the sopping wet guitar and bass really give it a sort of late-80s movie soundtrack vibe that I really dig. Grooves pretty well, to boot!

And I actually like the ripped-from-cassette artifacts in this context. Great character.

I'm listening through some good speakers and it sounds pretty damn good to me. This is a cool song, thanks for posting it.

Oh, by the way, that's my fretless 66 Jazz bass you're hearing there. Have I mentioned before how much I love that thing?
