Are You Gonna Go My Way

September 19, 2008 6:32 AM

A few days ago I had a vision that my band did a cover of Are You Gonna Go My Way. Then my band did a cover of Are You Gonna Go My Way. This is that cover.

I usually use programmed drums for Los Muchachos Mexicanos songs because they're easy to record, but Lenny didn't use a click track on his recording so the time was all over the place on my reference. This meant I had to schlep down to my local studio to record real drums. The base concept for this cover was no bending strings on guitar and a dork-ing up bass part. Just shitty playing in general.

You're sick, mexican. Wonderfully sick.

Ha, I hate this song. So. Much. But I like this. It's just perfectly lousy. In a good way.

Your cover is bad and you should feel good for posting it.

At first I thought, "Hey, I kinda liked that song," and then I thought, "Hey, wait, I think it was only because Cindy Blackman has an awesome afro," and then I thought, "man, I needed to do something tonight... what was it."

Oh, and this is great.

The Legion of Rock Start is indeed awesome. I was thinking of them some while I was working on this. It's hard to be as shitty as those guys, though. They are truly masters. I did take a little direct inspiration from them and put my cover behind the video for the original song.
Also, thanks for reminding me that Danzig exists.

This is amazing musical satire. The only thing that keeps it from being perfect is the vocals, I just feel like they should be attacked as WILDLY over the top David Lee Roth style to contrast the super vanilla musicianship.

Man, that's a great idea, taking all the bending out of a song that so depends on it for feeling.. Kudos!

I didn't really have a strong idea for what i wanted to do with the vocals. I rented a studio to record the drums for an hour and had 4 or 5 OK drum takes with 20 minutes left and decided to try and get the vocals with my left over time. If anyone wants to try and put better vocals with this song, I've put the GarageBand file up on my S3 account.

You make Kravitz listenable. This doesn't seem to be a bad song played like this.
