8 More Miles to Louisville

October 9, 2008 4:30 PM

More "americana" from that woodshed in Sweden. Recorded on a battered radio/cassette player in 1984(?) so its low fi. We called ourselves The Early Puritans on the occasions we actually got paid for a gig.

Most of our stuff was Irish/Scottish or English but we did a other stuff for a giggle. Train blues and 50's doowop even.
This one is in the classical tradition of sentimental songs about what I imagine are in reality rather humdrum places. Not having ever been in Louisville though, I could be mistaken.
Finding the tape after all these years was rather traumatic. So I started playing 12-string again even if it wont bring back my misspent youth.

Nice lil' tune. This theme of being almost home, or almost at one's destination is an interesting one. Not quite there yet. Right off the top of my head, there's Dylan's relatively recent (from Time Out of Mind): "...I'm 20 miles outta town, and Cold Irons bound", and Edwin Starr's 25 Miles. But there's been tons of 'em.

Think I'll maybe make an FPP on that theme, if I can dig up enough good links...

That's some tasty guitar playin'. I could really see using this in a movie or something.

Very nice! The lo-fi recording is a great match to the style.

This sounds terrific. The recording style itself is especially nice, besides the good tune and singing.

Wow, jan, this is great. I LOVE the vocal vibrato. I'm glad this hasn't been lost and forgotten in a box somewhere!

Being from Louisville, I consider this a lovely tribute to a place you've never been. :)
I'd be proud to hear it floating out of a bar somewhere on Bardstown Road.

In fact, I really want to cover it.

Super slick recording for an ol' boom box. Nice stereo even!
