Lost My Mind

A song about what happens when the right set of eyes meets yours. This is from my new band, and was taped in Steve's garage on Saturday.

The new group is called Hemlock Shot. It's really the same people I've been playing with for the last few years, minus the guitar player that isn't me. We didn't do much of anything last year, so a new name and a bunch of new songs seemed like a good way to kickstart things.

The recording was done with a 4 track cassette deck; we did the music in stereo first then overdubbed the vocals. I transferred those 4 tracks to my computer and did the final mix there.

I'd appreciate any feedback you all have on improving the mix. I didn't really do much to this other than adjust the levels, just rolled off some of the bass because it sounded too rumbly and put limiters on everything to control the worst peaks. I'm hoping we'll record like this every month or two, so ideas to get a better recording would be great too.

Cool song - I would totally go see this band, I especially like the vocals.
As for mix advice: this is personal preference and could be just wrong, but I'd push the vocals back and effect them a bit (maybe 10-15% each of some slap delay and reverb). It's obvious that the vocals were recorded after the fact, which detracts from the punk urgency of the rest of it. If you don't like effects, try drinking a quart of your favorite booze, then grabbing the microphone with both hands, mashing it against your face, and recording that way.

This is loads of fun. I agree with arcanecrowbar: pushing the vocals back just a teeny tad might be a good idea. But I think the vocals (and song) are great!

I played the tracks for the band at practice last night, and they all agree with both of you-- bring the vocals back and add some reverb/delay. Gonna do another mix this weekend, so I'll post more next week.
