Monotonethumping

March 17, 2009 10:06 AM

An attempt to create a recording of the late-90s boozehound anthem Tubthumping that sounds as flat and obnoxious as the hundredth chorus of fratboys singing along with it did by the end of that decade. Happy St. Paddy's Day!

As an exercise in recording as quickly and as haphazardly as possible, this was a nice break from the more careful home-recordist nerdery I've been up to lately.

Passionless punk rock! But... why?

It's the harmonica that does it.

A harmonica is god's way of saying "don't worry about your aim, just exhale a bunch and it's music". Banjo is similar except with flailing instead of blowing, which is nice if you're easily winded.

Passionless punk rock! But... why?

Is there anything more punk that intentionally refusing to embrace the expectations of punk?

Ha. Anything that makes St. Patrick's Day even more ridiculous is okay by me.

I've been using a lot of harmonica lately. I notice that you can use it on just about any key, as long as you only stick to one or two notes.

Somebody needs to knock you down for this one. And hard enough that you won't get back up again.

Huh, I just referenced this song the other day.

I hated Tubthumping when it came out, I hate hate it now, and your song is no improvement (I mean this in a good way!). This is pretty horrible. It made me smile, and I think does a good job of pointing out that the original wasn't any better.

As a kid I always heard "And I get up again" as "Slobodan Milosevic." (The "Slobodan" was sorta crammed in; the "Milosevic" mapped onto "get up again.")

Maddening, isn't it? If I had had the patience, I would have built in a dropped half-beat or two, to really nail the "I am drunk and amusical and I am going to provide you with musical entertainment now, no, no, no need to thank me, I do this out of love" aesthetic.
