Instead of plucking the tines I banged on the back of the instrument with a rubber mallet. A homemade contact mic was held in place by the tines, but just barely, and fed into a distorted guitar amp. A broken solder point ended this experiment.

Yes, I did in fact break the contact microphone. It was just one of these though and it was a snap to fix. I recommend making one if you haven't already.

Oh, man, ouch. This sounds like a transmission from crashlanded mbira aliens.
(I've got a contact mic like that, too, but the whole thing is dipped in liquid rubber.)
