Arvo Pärt: Fratres für streichquartett
May 29, 2009 9:38 AM
As a personal homework assignment to prepare for writing a string quartet, I've been programming scores of various 20th Century string quartets into Cakewalk SONAR. Here's a recording of Fratres by Arvo Pärt.
I'm using the Orkester samples in Reason to recreate the quartet. The samples don't contain harmonics, which are called for at the start of the score. The violin I and viola parts are also tuned "scordatura", which extends the range of the instrument beyond the samples available. So I had to adjust a few things.

I haven't always like the idea of using samples, let alone in this way, but man, the technology is damn good these days as is your skill in using it. Bravo!
