Lithium Spanish Flea

October 27, 2009 11:08 PM

A mashup of Nirvana's "Lithium", and Herb Alpert's "Spanish Flea."

Made in about 20 minutes with Ableton.
Came home to find my wife humming "spanish flea." I started humming the bassline and realized the first 2 bars of "spanish flea" are quite similar to "Lithium." I had to cut 'n paste to make it all fit, but not too much.

And so here it is. I hope it makes you smile.

Ha! I wish you'd had the isolated vocal track from "Lithium"--the shift in harmonic context with the verse vocal line is really interesting, but the guitar and bass sort of get in the way. I also really liked the transition from the end of the bridge back into the verse. Really neat.

You bastard! Making me like a Nirvana song...what a dick.

Seriously...not fair...Effing brilliant, though!

Definite smile-inducer. The guitars from the Lithium chorus can get pretty overpowering, but then there's the cowbell, and the perky brass comes back in, and all's well in grungeland once more.

I have empirically determined this doesn't get less awesome after the 5th listen in a row. Bravo.

And over a year later, whenever I think of either Spanish Flea or Lithium, I think of this song.
