What does everyone thing of the Rane 68 and Ableton Live/Serrato Scratch announcements today?

Long story short -- the Rane is a club mixer with Serrato Scratch built into it, and you can now control the master tempo in Ableton Live with a turntable.

I think this is going to revolutionize DJing, personally.

I swear that there were already mixers that were Scratch-enabled (not counting Hawtin's customized A&H mixer). There are already DJs who use Ableton and vinyl, right? (I can't think of any off the top of my head because I quit paying attention to the equipment a long time ago) How do they sync tempos? Manually?

I don't think it will really revolutionize anything.. it really doesn't seem that much more than other interfaces that have existed for a few years to control Djing / live music apps.

You could probably use Ms Pinky to control Ableton tempo as well, and that's a lot cheaper for me than upgrading to Ableton 8 and buying a Scratch setup.

Of course, I still just play and buy vinyl.

You kind of could, but you were more or less locked into the ableton tempo when you did that, you couldn't really adjust or cue ableton to match records. With this configuration, you can.

For example, I use ableton when I DJ, and if I'm following another DJ, I have to stop his record and start mine up separately, I can't just mix in seamlessly. With the new software, I can do that.

Couldn't you just map a MIDI knob to Ableton's tempo and change pitch like on a record?

Yeah, but that's almost useless for trying to actually beatmatch, where you really need to be able to have fine control.

Yea, I hear what your sayin' empath. This opens a pretty big door for creativity. I was just listening to some Beastie Boys, still dig 'em, but I was thinking, "Damn, that shit sounds ARCHAIC and shit." Seriously.

(Samples and mixing limited by time signature and whatnot.) This should be very cool.
