little metal sanza

April 26, 2010 9:34 PM

I decided to start doing some audio-video documenting of my various instruments: no grand opuses or anything, just little demonstrations. the video (which also includes a bit of show-and-tell spoken introduction) can be seen at YouTube.

I call this instrument a sanza, but they go by various names, depending on what particular african language you happen to speak. There are probably hundreds of names for these instruments across Africa. Anyway, they are classified as lamellophones.

Hey, thanks for this man. Your thumbs sure look like they know what they're doing! I was just thinking about you Sunday while watching a band from Senegal. Amazing stuff, African music.

I'm amazed that whole of a sound comes out of something that small and metal.

Love the video.
Looks like a commercial for a thousand year-old iPod.
Sympathetic buuhzz. (I've had that at many a party.)
