"Fairy Dust" - The Troggs Tapes Parts 1 & 2

May 29, 2010 3:31 PM

I first heard these tapes (Pt 1 and Pt2) way back in the early '80's when they were circulating around UK recording studios. The scene: The Troggs ('60's band -"Wild Thing" etc) are in the studio trying to get a track down. They're having a few...er....differences of opinion. Not an unfamiliar situation to those of you who are, or have ever been, in a band. Their unmodulated Wiltshire accents (English West Country "ohh arrr" etc) are a particular delight. Foul language from the get-go, so make sure anyone with a sensitive disposition isn't around when you play this.

Part 2 is the funniest. Someone's actually done a remix that's pretty good too. Enjoy!

That's certainly some creative use of the word "fuck"... :P

Ha! Major these are brilliant, especially number two. Everyone always picks on the drummer! I think there's a whole sub-genre of outrageously self-important studio outtakes out there. The first I can recall hearing is this eternal gem, "One good turn deserves another!" It takes a minute to get going, but is such a frighteningly accurate demonstration of people arguing for arguing sake. Some choice phrases include:

"You're being inexorable!"

"Now you're being sagacious man; and don't come off with that crap with me."

"Are you going to try the fucking part that the producer came up with or are you going to stalemate the evening like a juvenile buffoon?"

"My problem is YOU!"

Every opinion uttered by one person in the room is countered by someone else with their own opinion. The result is a painful conclusion to what must have been a dreadful evening of clashing egos trying to make utterly silly music.

The blog I found this clip on, Bedazzled, has a link to another page entitled Demos from Hell with a lot more of this type of soul crushing banter.

Of course I missed the entire youtube channel this video is linked to, entitled ClassicStudioOuttake.

And Major, is the "ohh arrr" you mention a part of the word "floor" as spoken by the guy behind the glass? A great accent indeed.

sounds familiar.

these have been wonderful - the st regis with al kooper one is brilliant and i'd not heard it before. the troggs still crack me up. just to be pedantic - they were from hampshire (andover and winchester). but it does sound very west country. not sure you'd hear that accent round there much anymore...

Don't forget the SNL send up of this with James Taylor, Paul Shaffer, etc as reconnaissance minstrels.
