Like a Virgin

So JaiMahodara and I threw this cover together for the challenge last night. Last minute, and a little unrefined. But we had fun.

Madonna's Like a Virgin was #1 on January 17, 1985.

Ha, I like how the chorus sounds like it's about to "kick in" but then, no, it doesn't.

Somehow this gets more disturbing as it goes on.

The slow drift of the melody line away from the beat just ratchets up the weird menace of the whole thing. Like John Wayne Gacy is trying to explain his trouble with women to you while distractedly polishing a blunt object.

But in a good way!

yeah, the phasing was accidental at first, while we were just jamming a bit learning the song because we'd never played it, but then we thought it sort of sounded ethereally creepy in a kind of interesting way, so we decided to keep it.

it's kind of a tough song to cleverly cover, I realized, because there are lots of obvious sorts of ways that would get a "heh heh," so I tried to sort of toe that line without taking the cheap road, I guess. I would have like more time to spend on it, but then again, it's just a silly cover.

Is it wrong that I really want you to send me the instrumental mix, so I can counter with a post-industrial Like a Surgeon?
