No No No (The Ballad of Gina and Bobby)

July 7, 2010 12:54 PM

A lazy little two-minute blast that can't even manage to find room for a bridge.

I was trying to write, and it just wasn't working out. So I mixed this instead. It's silly and adolescent and brutal... but I like it.

Perfect. I heard ramones+early the jam+the beach boys=delicious rock candy. Such a satisfying guitar sound.

Thanks--is it okay if I take that as a huge compliment? I was shooting for Ramones when I started on this--I came up with the first line in the shower and thought, "that would make a good Ramones song"--but sort of got away from it as things went on. Glad you found it in there, someplace.

And I agree about the guitar sound: the little Blackheart does one thing, but it does it really well. Just jam an SM57 haphazardly against the grill and hit record. Great little recording amp.

James Brown: "Can I take it to the bridge?"
uncleozzy: "No!"

Yeah.

This rules. You are definitely in the top two or so here on MeFiMu as far as electric guitar sounds go.

Yeah, the Ramones influence here is pretty clear to me too -- the first line sounds like it might turn into "The Return Of Jackie And Judy."

1. If James Brown's ghost wanted to take it to the bridge, you can bet your ass I'd take it there as expediently as possible.

2. Thanks, Karlos. What's funny is that I really dig the super-chimey sound that chococat sometimes gets, and which I am entirely unable to do (the POD's clean tones are good, but I've never quite gotten exactly where I wanted to get with them). I didn't participate in the "is it real or is it Memorex" thread about amp sims, but if nothing else, I've learned that the PODxt absolutely can't do a convincing mid-gain crunchy tone. This stupid little sub-Watt amp does it with aplomb.

Oh, and re: Ramones. The first vocal takes--which I might still have--I did a full-on Joey Ramone. And they're awful. Also I'm campaigning for the Ramones version of "Baby I Love You" as the first dance at my wedding.

"Maceo! Uncleozzy! Can I take it to the bridge! As expediently as possible!"

I think it would be a fun monthly challenge to write and record bridges for existing songs that don't have them.

Do you have the blackheart killer ant, or the 5w one?

It's the Killer Ant, but I'm running it through the 12" cabinet they make for the 5w amp--I didn't try the 10" cab, but I usually don't like the sound of a single 10" speaker. The 12" sounds great (although it's just a little softer than it appears here; I added a little bit of midrange). The two together hardly get louder than a loud TV.
