To Tennessee + Gonna Move to Kansas City

April 2, 2011 10:37 PM

Playing the djembe that lives at Cozmo's Cafe, Shibuya, Tokyo. The first tune is my own, the second is a traditional southern number I heard on one of the Alan Lomax Smithsonian collections: Alabama: Deep River of Song. Video here.

TO TENNESSEE

jesus and the devil
two sides of a coin you know
one's in heaven the other's in hell
neither place is where i wanna go
i wanna go to tennessee

don't wanna sit on your front porch
don't wanna scratch your back
don't wanna jump off the roof babe
or lay down on the railroad track
i wanna go to tennessee

you think i'll never get outta here
that's what i heard you say
but honey i'm here to tell you
where there's a will there's a way
i wanna go to tennessee

now you know i love you baby
ain't no doubt about that
but if i get a chance to go to tennessee
gonna leave you like a worn out hat
i wanna go to tennessee

Love it man. Nice to hear and see you drummin'! No wonder you don't keep a little jazz set (kit?)...that might be dangerous...might burn the house down with it! Woo hoo!

a little jazz set (kit?)

Either term, kit or set, is appropriate. For years and years, I said "drum set", but I think I mostly switched over to saying "drum kit" in the early 90s. Not sure why... just sounds better, maybe. And, as far as burning down the house, well, I'll leave that to the Talking Heads! I would keep a drum kit around and set up, though, if I had a) enough room for it and b) walls that weren't paper thin, with neighbors on the other side of them.
