The Music Incubator

Introducing The Music Incubator, a place to incubate your musical ideas until you're ready to go public with them.

A few of the challenges (aka features) of music.mefi are that --

1. Any song you post is de facto public. Not only to everyone here, but the whole wide world of the internets

2. If you post something for feedback, there are often diminishing returns of you subsequently post adjusted versions. It's interesting to hear a rough acoustic demo and then a polished ensenble version -- much less so to hear a version with the drums up 3dB and a new prechorus.

3. Some folks (not me personally) don't want to post anything that isn't 'finished', but would still be interested in feedback especially when it's something that they're not sure about, or represents a new direction.

So I created the Music Incubator. It's a closed Facebook group which is intended as a place where you can post work in progress, sketches, ideas, whatever, for constructive criticism, suggestions, technical notes or whatever from the other members.

'Closed' means only members can see what you post. So your family and friends and bandmates don't get to go rummaging through your stuff.

Yes, it's Facebook, but feel free to create a single-purpose FB account under you Mefi handle if you don't want Zuckerberg peering through your window.

This is not specifically a mefi resource - I'll be inviting other non-mefi musicians I know and trust and I invite you to do the same. Currently new members need to be approved by me but I'm happy to make other folk admins so it doesn't have to go through me.

The purpose of this is not to supplant music.mefi in any way but to open up and support the front end of the creative process.

In terms of posting music to FB, I've found Soundcloud the best option. Soundcloud also has some social features which are useful.

I'm in - just as soon as I create a Facebook thang. Hopefully, this weekend.

Great. I forgot to say I expect to be decidedly low traffic.
