Ha! Now don't take this the wrong way, old boy, but to me it sounds like an early 80s sitcom theme which morphs into an early 80s cop show theme. And I mean that in a good way!

It's not terribly easy to mean that in a good way is it - given the generally ghastly nature of early 80's soundtracks (Miami Vice et al)! But, yup, you're quite right and I have the same kind of reference impression - probably why I never did anything with it, although the lead guitar part is not bad imho. Unfortunately it won't transform into an early 80's fee.....hey ho.

The Miami Vice soundtrack is in fact awesome, although this doesn't really remind of that.
