MefiMusicDuel

I think we should have some musical duels.

Maybe it's the second Martini talking but I love the idea of musical duels. The challenger issues a challenge; the challengee responds with a counter challenge. A default is a loss. Winner stays on.

Sort of inspired by Chococat talking about belting in the Creep thread over on the Blue. Desperately wanted to hear some Chococat belting. Impotent to produce it.

Man, I love Martinis.

Ah yes, The Unbearable Lightness Of Being Totally Wrecked. A condition I'm embarrasingly familiar with. You are hereby forgiven and excused.

If it's any comfort, I narrowly averted what would have been, sober, a horribly maudlin upload on Friday night based on a bit of Pete Frame-style You Tube surfing. A jaunt that took me from Colin Blunstone via The Zombies (Rod Argent) and Argent (Russ Ballard and Bob Henritt) to Unit 4 + 2 and this charmingly innocent, gauchly literal (a construction site, I ask you) and entirely artless piece of pure nostalgia from the days before things got quite so cynical and corporate. I think it was going to form the centrepiece of a rant against overchoreographed, blinged-up, risk-managed Cowellshit culminating in an invitation to others to reveal their nostalgic triggers. But I didn't. Whew.

Oh, fuck, I came across that Concrete & Clay video a couple of weeks ago and posted it to Facebook... SO GREAT... not just the construction site but the SUITS... they all look like members of the Young Conservatives or the local Board of Commerce.

I'd still like to hear Chococat doing some showtunes a la Ethel Merman though.

I thought they just looked like half-a-dozen young 'erberts with office jobs amazed at sudden success and not quite sure what to make of it all. I found it oddly touching for some reason - the innocence of it and all so very long ago now.... Love the geezers in the background now and then with flat caps - you can almost hear them muttering about "bloody long 'aired layabouts, out to be in the fuckin' army, never did me any 'arm"

The Ethel Merman Sings Chococat idea is a cracker. I'd also like to hear George Formby Gives UnSane A Thick Ear While He's Cleaning Windows 7. Not to say Henry Crun: My Personal Tribute To Flapjax At Midnight. I could go on, but unfortunately it's the working week so I'm stone cold sober.

I want to see someone post a link to a single instrument recording, and then someone else responds "I've got it for two hours" and has to return with a link to a dual instrument recording (or else forfeit), and so on, until we have something desperately, desperately pointless and awful.

but I never get what I want

and, uh, the dual instrument recording is their own single instrument added to the original single instrument, just in case that wasn't clear

I'd happily do my worst at whatever counter-challenge might be the price to hear MajorDundee Sings Any Song From INXS's First Album, Backed By CarrotAdventure's Interpretation of the Sweet New Wave Synth Riffs of Andrew Farriss.

(A strange game...the only winning move is...not to play.)

Ok, this is maybe going off on a tangent, but remember that website "in Bb"? What if there was a MetaFilter version of that.

Call it M# or MetaChordProject or something rad like that. Someone creates the guidelines (single key, chord, whatevs), then everybody has like a week to create a track (preferably a youtube of you actually playing it if possible!) and then it all gets compiled onto one page.
posted by Doleful Creature at 11:53 AM on April 26, 2012

what The World Famous said. Either there'd have to be a prearranged order to send the files, or... something. Maybe via dropbox would be easier, uploading the additional files and numbering each additional take... I dunno.

I kind of like the duel idea, but I'm trying to think of a way that it could be done where it's more inclusive than exclusive. Coming up with a title/style that's a funny contrast to what someone normally posts is great, but it also is heavily skewed towards people who are already frequent contributors or who have a distinct sound. My personal desire for the challenges is to come up with ideas that get more people contributing or commenting.

I like the idea of more mini-challenges - doleful creature's seapunk suggestion was a good one, i thought - but wonder if there's a risk that more challenges results in fewer submissions per challenge. According to the tags, there were 6 submissions for Feb, 5 for March, and 3 for April (thus far). So 14 songs out of 141 posted in that same time frame.
posted by dubold at 12:04 PM on April 26, 2012

FWIW, I consider the seapunk mini-challenge to be an open challenge, in that I'm still working on my personal opus in that hallowed genre.

Wait, so is this like exquisite corpse/layer tennis, or something else? That sounds kind of cool.

Yeah, totally that.

This would be awesome, but a two-hour window would mean there's no way a lot of us could participate, given limited times when we can actually get with our music gear and do the thing.

Yeah; the idea is to allow someone with the time and the inclination to "block off" a given window of time in the moment, enough time to do something interesting, but not enough time to obsess over it or have it interfere with life too much..and of course if the time expires without that person posting, then someone else can claim it.

Two hours feels right to me, but that's negotiable; the important thing is that, for each layer, someone else can grab it, and everyone knows it has been grabbed so nobody wastes effort (like that one person who grabs an image in layer tennis, works on it, then comes back to find three other people have already extended the same image.) Gotta have some kind of time constraint, to accommodate the fact that music production has longer turnaround time, even when half-assed.

Having said that, this is probably more a fantasy than an executable idea, but I find myself tempted. Heh, or have a prearranged time that a single instrument will be posted, then give everyone one hour to do whatever they want to it, and collect 'em all and assemble them into a cacophonous nightmare. That would probably the opposite of anything good, though.
posted by davejay at 1:05 PM on April 26, 2012

Oh, and the whole thing isn't over in two hours, or a day, or however long the time period is; that's just how long someone can claim the file to work on exclusively.

I've got a really simple repetitive guitar riff (quite a good one) which I'm happy to donate. It's two simple chords that really could be taken in any direction. I've been trying to come up with something to go over it and failing. I could post it tomorrow AM if it would work. I might just post eight bars of it, say... it's the kind of thing that's extremely easy to chop up.

Oh darn, I can't because I already posted this week. Maybe someone else can do it.

Anyway, here's the initial MP3.

I've created a shared dropbox folder, so anyone who wants access just needs to memail me with their email address and I'll give access. It's a 320 kbps mp3 but I can do an aiff if required.

Corpse-unSane.mp3

130bpm. The chords are Dm and G. It's just an 8-bar section looped for about a minute. The count at the beginning is just to help you line it up if you need to.

Should I make a song post with it or not?
posted by unSane at 6:32 AM on April 27, 2012

For convenience, I say leave it here in this thread, and don't make a song post about it until it has sat idle for 48 hours, at which point we call it done. That's my two cents, anyway.

Oh, and: I hereby claim the track until 10:15AM PDT (two hours from this comment.) I'll post my contribution back to this thread.
posted by davejay at 8:15 AM on April 27, 2012

Still a 320 kbps mp3, the second half is the first half, repeated...

Corpse-round-two.mp3 -- unSane's contribution and mine, mixed.

Corpse-davejay.mp3 -- my contribution by itself for prosperity.

Whoever wants it next, claim Corpse-round-two.mp3 and get to work! Don't forget to give unSane your email address so you can upload to the shared dropbox folder.

Suggestion: when you write out your mp3 ID tag, use the same tag info and add your credit to the comments.
posted by davejay at 9:43 AM on April 27, 2012

Thinking about it again, I suppose you could ask the mods to sidebar it to increase the contribution likelihood. Or make a new post pointing back to this one...I dunno, really. And we could maybe post each layer to Music, with a link back to this thread...what do you think?
posted by davejay at 9:45 AM on April 27, 2012

I added my stem to the dropbox folder, now.

IDEA: Get a few more rounds of layers and stems going (definitely some vocals, maybe some more bass and percussions and some other random stuff) then:

Everybody who contributed a layer takes all the layers and make their own remix of the whole thing. You can chop it up and add as many effects as you want, but no more new layers (unless you're like overdubbing existing layers or something). Basically it becomes a whole album of different tracks all based on the same set of things.

I realize this could be way harder to execute but pretty pretty please

Well, unSane, I took that advice and kinda ran with it. Don't know if I violated the spirit of the thing, though... I sliced and diced and chopped and stirred and kinda turned it into a *song* fer chrissakes. Well, anyway, here's the mix I came up with:

Yeah, that was thoughtful. That's why having the stems is so useful. Layering on the original file gives the whole thing a kind of unity but it's nice to be able to re-engineer it too.

posted by unSane at 9:41 AM on May 1, 2012 [3 favorites]

I think that was inevitable since the original riff was very static and repetitive. I did have a bunch of other bits that I could have put in to make a song but it felt like they were driving it in too specific a direction and I sort of saw it as a piece of lego which others could add to. What flapjax did was to take the tall pile that had been built and make something wonderful with it... I suspect that this is quite likely to be the way it always goes... you build a sort of critical mass of building blocks and eventually someone listens to it and goes 'I CAN BUILD SOMETHING WITH THAT'.

If so, it could be an interesting way to build songs.

I think I had to cut out a few ms of lead in time for it to sync up perhaps there are still a few different versions that haven't done that. But that wouldn't make it wander out.

Love the backing vocals...
posted by pmcp at 10:45 AM on May 2, 2012

Yeah, I noticed the 130bpm drift the second time I had it, dunno what's up there. Anyhoo, go ahead and forget about mine, and just use unSane's. I personally don't think forking should become the norm, lest we eventually end up with a group of people each scribbling on their own pieces of paper -- an exquisite corpse that is not.

and by the way, this is why "claiming" the track is so important.
posted by davejay at 12:20 PM on May 2, 2012

I'm not sure there's anything necessarily wrong with forking, although I completely agree it shouldn't be the norm. For me the endgame here is definitely to do a mix using all the different stems, and forks if there should be forks.

Davejay, did you suggest that the corpse is officially dead when no-one touches it for 48 hours? That seems like an interesting plan.
posted by unSane at 12:27 PM on May 2, 2012

Eh, I dunno, it ultimately doesn't matter, so long as everyone is having fun.
posted by davejay at 12:50 PM on May 2, 2012

I had the track at round 3, but had a bit of reading comprehension fail and didn't realize the track was at 130...so I eyballed it in Logic at like 128.9 bpm or something like that (and I had my metronome off during record so I didn't notice anything wrong with that setting)...but that shouldn't have affected it since I recorded the horn track live and didn't quantize anything...all it did really was change the measuring units in Logic itself, which maybe affected the end time? I swear I did not do any time-stretching at all, but if it is somehow my fault I deeply apologize and will buy you all beers/milks/fancy teas if we ever meet IRL.

*cheeks turn red*

FWIW my instrument-only track was bounced at 130 bpm, and I'm happy to re-bounce the layered track at the proper bpm too.
posted by Doleful Creature at 1:16 PM on May 2, 2012

the version i got had a slight amount of space before the first beat, so even having at 130 led to a slight lag. I trimmed a bit off the head, everything lined up at 130..
posted by dubold at 1:25 PM on May 2, 2012

Yeah, mp3s never line up exactly because of the way they're encoded. I don't think any of these things caused it -- maybe slipped in when Flapjax was cutting and pasting? But it's of no real consequence I don't think.

Is anyone planning to grab it and do some more? I'd quite like to have a stab at my mix but I don't want to deprive myself of any riches!
