stories 'bout you

June 14, 2012 1:30 PM

Inspired (if that's the appropriate word) by ubiquitous news reports about internet trolls, cyber bullying and suchlike. Uploaded now primarily because in response to a talk post from me unSane has kindly offered to take a shot at improving the overall sound via mastering alchemy - so in due course you'll see just how shit this version really sounds....

Instrumentation for anoraks (that'll be me then):
left channel rhythm guitar - Gibson SG Special (P90's)
right channel rhythm guitar + verse choppy guitar - Fender Telecaster '62 Custom Reissue
chewy lead guitar - Gibson ES335 (neck pickup - love this sound)
arpeggio, tremolo and harmonics guitar - Fender Stratocaster.

Amp - Fender SuperChamp XL
Amp mic - SM57 (natch)
Vocal mic - AKG C414 (hypercardioid setting)
Preamp - Focusrite ISA One

Everything else - Korg Triton LE

DAW - Yamaha AW2400

Lyric

How come your Facebook heaven turned to hell?

Every little tweet
turning up the heat
jagged little spiteful post.
Hatefulness arrives
vicious and alive.
Babe, you're looking like a ghost

Hey Rachael
Don't worry none
Don't worry 'bout those stories 'bout you
I know why just as well as you know why
they're telling stories 'bout you

Face to face:
"I never meant to say those things"

Some are sad fools
Some are mad and cruel
Some just want to see you squirm
Don't retaliate
Don't respond to hate
Don't allow another turn

Hey Rachael
they're telling lies
don't listen to those stories 'bout you.
Like butterflies they'll just flutter by when they're tired
of telling stories 'bout you.

Beautiful, smart, cool -
babe that's why they hate you so.
Girl's not a fool
there's a golden rule
got to simply let it go.

Hey Rachael
don't antagonise
just walk away from stories 'bout you.
Be subtle when you burst that bubble
don't double you're trouble telling stories 'bout you
.......and me.

that's "double your trouble" rather than "you're" of course.

Almost like ska in the first part of the verse, and some bits reminded me a bit of The Jam. Superb work mate + sounds good to me (sound wise). So, tl;dr - class mate.

God, and there I was thinking I might one day be able to put some music up on here! *hangs head in shame*

Great song, Major, and terrific performances throughout.

I posted some examples of how it sounds through different mastering chains here.

I think this song rocks how it is. Nice and clean and shimmery, late 80's Brit style, shiny guitars in your face. Any improvements, sonically, would be due to having an actual live drummer, in my opinion.
