October Challenge - It Gets Better

October's challenge is simple: produce a piece of music on the theme of "it Gets Better", for possible inclusion in the MeFi "It Gets Better" video, as described in this Meta thread. Use the tags 'mefimusicchallenge' and 'itgetsbetter'. I'm sure accompanying videos will be heartily welcomed and if you have any other questions or suggestions, feel free to post them in this thread and I'll make sure the organizer, jph, gets to see them.

I'm leaving a note here; I'm working on a track right now EVEN IN MY SLEEP. I'm way intimidated by this but I really, really want to contribute something meaningful.

I wrote something specifically for the challenge, but alas won't be able to finish a decent recording before midnight Pacific time. I've also been working on a recording of the same piece with a fellow MeFite (yay), and am excited about the collaboration.

I'm wondering if music done after the deadline would still be considered for use in the MeFi It Gets Better project? If so, cool, and if not, no worries but I thought I'd ask.

Congrats to the folks who submitted before the deadline! Looking forward to listening to them after I finish this recording.

There's not generally a hard cutoff on these things around here, but I'd say they longer you wait the more likely it is that they will be at a point in the project that they can't use additional music. You might want to drop a MeMail to jph (who UnSane linked to above) to see for sure.

Thanks, InfidelZombie -- just dropped a note to jph based on your suggestion. Yeah, I'm really hoping to finish a better recording sooner than later, but totally understand about the cutoff having to happen at some point.

I started out with tbe best of intentions to add something to Major Dundee's chorus that he posted but then the bridge that I wrote turned into a different song entirely, which wasn't about anything getting better. I still have the verse for it, though, but you know how it goes...

I often find that for me the natural period for these challenges is actually two months not one. I'm not the kind of person who dashes off a song in a morning... it's more like solving a hard problem in algebra for me, as my initial instincts are rarely the right ones.

Okay, here's some good news for those of us who wanted to submit music for the MeFi It Gets Better project, but missed the October challenge deadline -- I received a nice reply from jph, who's given me permission to post his message here for the benefit of anyone following this thread:

"Never fear, the time frame for the music challenge was only a month because that is sort of how MeFiMu Challenges are structured. In reality, we won't need the music until at least Dec. 1 when we are setting the deadline for all other content submissions. So record away! The more the merrier! And thanks so much for participating!"

So, I'm aiming to have something ready in time, and I hope this will encourage other folks, too. Thanks again, jph!
