Soul Love - David Bowie cover
July 30, 2013 9:55 AM
My gate-crashing addition to the David Bowie Ziggy Stardust Music Challenge
So I only popped over to Music a few days ago and saw the Challenge for this month - a group remake of Ziggy Stardust. It was far too late to sign up for the official song distribution list, so I went rogue. (If that's frowned upon around these parts, let me know and I’ll start the requisite penance.)
I just heard Soul Love for the first time a few months ago, and thought it was so infectiously groovy. I figured this was as good a time as any to dig into it.

10 Hunky Dorys and an Oh! You Pretty Things should do it.
FYI, anyone else reading this, it's not too late to enter this challenge. I am happy to continue handing out tracks up until the 31st.
This is great stuff, was really intrigued by cortex' description and I must say the actual track did not disappoint. Well done. I like the skittery hihats. Vocals are reminiscent of Bowie but different, which is a hard one to do as his delivery is so distinctive.
What's your recording setup like? What DAW are you using?

Thanks guys!

This was done entirely in Reason. No fancy set up. A basic usb mic for vocals and mixed on headphones.

Interesting. I love the sounds in Reason, but I just can't get into it as a multitrack.

Wow ! I wish I knew how to use all that software the way you do. Your take is quite chill and enjoyable and sounds a little tongue-in-cheek.

I like this take on the song. Makes me think of a certain sort of early '90s indie, the sort of thing you'd find on a NME covertape sandwiched between Dubstar and Pulp maybe.

This is such a fun cover with really great synth sounds. Is there some detuning on them? It feels very nostalgic to me, like playing an old Casio keyboard from the 80s.
