Stomatopod Cephalopod Triumph

April 5, 2014 2:45 PM

This is a song about a mantis shrimp, a blue-ringed octopus, and triumph. (Recorded eight years ago! Just realized that is a long time to procrastinate on making a video.)

Lyrics:

Introduced unknowingly yesterday
Murderous stomatopod stowaway
Aquatic sociopath he will not socialize
You'll be broken, dead before you realize
He's a tiny foe who's power must be understood
Flee before his first strike for your own good

With crushing force he cracks your shell
This aquarium is now hell

From this point on, things just get worse
Calcified clubs strike with bullet force
Exploding snail shells with cavitation bubbles
Skewering fish, everyone's in trouble
Death in the water he ambushes the weak
Continues the slaughter, eating the meek
Ripping off claws, making crabs limp
All must hail the mantis shrimp

An outside force has seen
The holocaust is obvious
They summon an ancient enemy
The deadly blue-ringed octopus

Furious, merciless
Venomous octopus
Golf-ball sized
Drab disguise
Blue rings glow
When he strikes a blow
When he connects
He injects TTX
No antidote exists
Respect the blue fist

Tactics are weighed
Strategies surveyed
Treading the water
They meditate slaughter
They circle and consider
Who will be the winner?

The sole solution becomes clear
They wait until the human draws near

The outside force gets too curious
Leans in, finds his creatures are furious
Mantis shrimp splits his thumb
The human is punished for being dumb
Spears his finger with immeasurable speed
Shocked with pain, he cannot leave
Blue-ringed octopus tentacles seize
Closes to bite, makes the heart freeze

Aquarium water runs red
Their so-called lord now is dead

Thanks! I'm hoping to make heavy, involved songs again someday, and it's super encouraging to hear that they work for you.

I'm not sure exactly what category of metal music this is, but I know it's the best version of it I ever heard. These lyrics are 100x better than any lyric I've heard in similar music (or other kinds of music, for that matter... it's really clever stuff), and while the guitars are relentlessly slaughtering my ears, they're also concerned with melody and other musical elements I value. Bravo!

My favorite musical moment is the "scary octopus is now waving his arms to intimidate you" riff at 1:40.

edlundart – it was modeled after the work of bands like Suffocation and Gorgasm. They played a style that, in the late '90s, was called technical or "brutal" death metal. I never had the chops to take it to that level, but I'm glad I tried!

And yeah, death metal lyrics, especially as a grown-up, often leave me…not engaged, too. They are kind of their own thing that rarely are good on their own, but work with the songs. Sepultura, Napalm Death, and Morbid Angel had great anthemic sort of lyrics in some songs, however.
