Astronomy Domine
January 16, 2007 7:51 PM
Threw a one-off session together years ago, for the fun of it. A friend was in town for a couple of days, and we wanted to do something fun, but easy. We cut the music live, then overdubbed the vocals, & mixed it all in an afternoon. Mark Hallman mixed & played rhythm guitar, & Bradley Kopp played an awesome solo. I'm on bass, as usual, and singing the low harmony, and believe it or not, the "Ahhh, Ahhh" falsetto part. Can't do that anymore. The original song, of course, was written & recorded by Pink Floyd on A Saucerful Of Secrets, and again live on Ummagumma.

Here I am, I click refresh to see if someone has replied in flapjax's song, where we are having a conversation, and Astronomy Domine appears. wow. Great contribution to the best day in Metafilter Music, DR.
I have to say, though. You guys wanted to do something fun but easy, and you chose this song? Gotta hang out more with the likes of you.
You pulled it off nicely, congratulations.

Hey. Just popped in to say that "Astronomy Domine" is the first song from Piper at the Gates of Dawn, not Saucerful of Secrets.
And also that this version is a beautiful and original cover that Syd himself would be delighted to hear. Huzzah! music.metafilter.com gets even better when you post awesome stuff like this!

Ah, thanks for the correction -- all I've got laying about here is the "A Nice Pair" compilation of the two albums, and I'm lazy. We did that back when the WWW was still called Arapnet, so being unable to look up the lyrics on line, we made up about 20% of them. I still don't know what they are.

The song started off kinda ordinary for me, but quickly got better and better. By the end, I didn't want it to finish. This was nice. Thanks mate!

This is fantastic - much more lively than the original. I'm not generally a fan of covers, but I really like this!

That’s probably the drummer going kinda nuts, relative to the original. Thanks! Glad someone likes it!
